Patient Information for Sleep Study
Please arrive by 6:45 p.m.
Welcome to the Sleep Disorders Center! Please read the following instructions provided so that your stay with us will be as trouble-free as possible. Thank you.
General Information
- The overnight study will usually (but not always) be completed by 5 a.m. Since it takes considerable time to fully analyze the study, the results may take up to four weeks to be available. TV and bathrooms with showers are available in each overnight room. TV will be turned off by staff at the start of the study recording.
- One parent or guardian will be required to stay on the floor with patient during the entire study.
- Other children/siblings are allowed to accompany you to your study appointment.
Before the Study
- Call (601) 984-5205 (choose option 1) to confirm your appointment by noon one business day before your study. If for any reason you are unable to attend your scheduled sleep study, you must cancel or reschedule your appointment at least two business days before your appointment to avoid the $35 no show fee.
- Maintain a regular schedule – bedtime, wake-up time, and daytime – for at least one week prior to the study.
What to Bring
- Sleep clothing (undergarments and two-piece pajamas made of non-slippery material). T-shirt and shorts are acceptable. No footed pajamas or onesies.
- A change of clothes for the next morning.
- If you sleep with a special pillow or blanket, feel free to bring it with you.
- Be sure to bring your child's medications, including prescription and over-the-counter. We cannot provide medications.
- Please bring your child's complex care items (feeding formula/pumps, foley care items, go bag for trach patients, and any items used for daily care needs).
Day of the Study
- Avoid excessive physical activity or unusual meals.
- Take a bath or shower and shampoo your hair on the day of your study. Hair and skin must be free of oils/conditioners and completely dry. If wearing braids, scalp must be accessible to apply sensors.
- Do not take naps the day of the study. (No late afternoon naps for infants/toddlers)
- Have dinner before you arrive. You may bring snacks or juices with you to eat in the room before the start of the study recording. There is no refrigerator or microwave available for patient use.
- Do not consume any caffeine (chocolate, tea, coffee, soft drinks) after 12 p.m.
During the Study
- Small sensors are attached with an adhesive substance to the scalp, face, chest and legs. Flexible pressure-sensitive belts are placed around the chest to evaluate breathing. None of the sensors are painful and should not significantly disturb your sleep. After the study is completed, you may shampoo your hair with warm water; this will easily remove any adhesive.
- The technician will be on duty during the entire study. A call light is present in the room so that you can call for the technician at any time. The patient will also be monitored by a video camera.
